The leather used at LeatherAndEarthCo is vegetable tanned leather. Vegetable tanned leather is tanned using natural ingredients such as tree bark in the tanning process. It comes in large sheets with all the natural grain of the hide. There will be veins, scars, smoother areas, and bumpier areas. Each piece is hand selected. This leather is used because it can be hand dyed to highlight the beauty of the natural leather. The velvety side of the leather is left untreated and natural, so chemicals will never affect the paper inside your journal. It also looks beautiful.
Some oil tanned leather is used because it is super soft and pliable for straps and other accessories made.

Caring for leather is very simple.
The more you use it the better it get! If you feel like it is getting a little bit dry rubbing a small amount of petroleum jelly on the area will go a long way.
Try not to get the leather wet. It will make the leather stiffer, and will especially affect the velvety interior.
